Diet and ice-cream: pleasure without losing shape

A vanilla and chocolate ice-cream is light and full of proteins. It is for this reason that it can be used in low-calorie diets instead of a meal. Here are a few tips so you won't have to forego one of the best-loved of sweets.

DIET AND ICE-CREAM

Ice-cream is a food full of simple carbohydrates, substances that provide immediate energy without tiring the body. Hence it is particularly appropriate for those who do sport.
With regards to the calorie count, we should bear in mind that there are different types of ice-cream, with nutritional values that vary according to the ingredients. A part from sorbets, which are not really ice-creams, there are "fatty" ice-creams prepared with cream, milk, eggs, sugar and particular ingredients which that determine its flavour, and the "lighter" ones made with just milk and added fruit.
A 100g portion of traditional ice-cream (made with cream, milk and eggs), provides about 220-300 calories. Yet aside from sugars and fats, it also contains a great deal of proteins.
It is for this reason that this particular kind of ice-cream, which is richer and more complete than the lighter variety, can substitute a meal in a low-calorie diet. This is on condition that the remaining meals of the day include nutritional elements which ice-cream alone does not provide, or those which it only provides in small percentages.
A cup of ice-cream eaten instead of a meal should weigh about 160g (of which 80g should be fruit ice-cream and 80g should be creamy flavours). To render the "snack" more complete, one can add some fresh fruit. Whipped cream, on the other hand, is best avoided: a topping of just 40g of cream sends the calorie count up by another 140 calories.
If one meal has been taken care of with an ice-cream, the others should supply fibres, vitamins and proteins: fish or meat (preferably grilled) accompanied by plenty of fresh vegetables, boiled or grilled are ideal.
For those who want to stay in shape without foregoing a meal and who prefer to eat sweets between meals, it might be a good idea to consider substituting the ice-cream with a fruit sorbet. Unlike the ice-cream, sorbet does not contain milk, eggs or cream, but only water, sugar and the juice or pulp of fruit. Thus it is less calorific.
