Relaxation and wellbeing in town

Here are a few tips for personal care that does not involve too much effort. Today it is possible to relax and do yourself good even during your coffee break, because the hammam (Turkish bath with aromatic steam), massages and yoga techniques have arrived where we most need them.
The trend began a few years ago although it has only begun to be a part of our daily lives just recently. It is undoubtedly the result of the need to create moments of relaxation during the work day and to dedicate moments of wellbeing to ourselves all year round in a gentle and continual manner. In fact having a massage or a yoga lesson just a short distance from home is a great commodity.
Thus the biggest cities have started to equip themselves with yoga centres and Oriental gyms in Milan, Rome, Florence and Bologna. Often these centres become islands of tranquillity in the midst of the city's traffic and chaos. These oases are fitted out like resorts where one can not only let oneself be pampered but also have a healthy and relaxing aperitif and get to know new people.

HAMMAM CENTRES IN ITALY

The first real Turkish bath in the centre of Bologna is called Hammam Bleu (Vicolo Barbazzi 4, tel.051.580162), located just a short distance from Piazza Cavour. Here one can try out the Tepidarium, calidarium, gommage, whirlpool and showers. One starts out from the warm acclimatising zone for preparing the body (tepidarium) before passing on to the steam room (calidarium). On leaving the calidarium one continues on to the skin exfoliation (gommage), which is followed by washing the body. One then sinks into the tepid whirlpool tub to conclude with a multi-jet aromatic shower. Before leaving the centre, those wishing to do so can try a traditional mint tea.
In Milan, one of the most frequented venues for a relaxing Turkish bath with tea break is the Hammam delle rose (viale Abruzzi, 15, tel. 02.29411653), which has separate men's and women's areas.
The centre dedicated to Turkish baths in Rome is simply called Hammam (Via della Maratona 87, tel. 06.36298573), where one can indulge in a steam bath with essential oils and unusual sponges.
