The cultivation of vines on the island of Elba is a tradition which has been handed down through the generations for hundreds of years: in the era of the Romans, Elba was famed as a producer of fine wines. As is the case in the hills of Liguria, on the largest island of the Tuscan archipelago the grapes are cultivated on terraces formed by dry-built walls and reclaimed soil. It is a difficult cultivation that requires effort and determination. The result is a wide range of DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata- Controlled Denomination of Origin) wines, including Elba white.
It is a young, thirst-quenching wine that is excellent drunk above all in the summer, when the temperature is on the high side. It is made from the processing of Tuscan Trebbiano and other white grape varieties authorised by the province of Livorno. Tuscan Trebbiano is one of the most widespread grape varieties in Italy owing to its capacity to adapt to different terrains and climates, and its considerable productivity.
Excellent as an aperitif, Elba white is also an ideal white wine for accompanying the second course fish-based dishes that are typical of the area such as Tuscan style calamari, vegetable soups, egg and soft cheese-bases dishes. The winy and delicate bouquet and its dry and harmonious flavour also make it suitable for accompanying hot or cold appetisers, pasta and risotto dishes, mixed fried fish, grilled fish and summer salads. It should be served cool, at 10°C in white wine tulip glasses.
A red variety of DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata- Controlled Denomination of Origin) Elba is also produced; it is an intense ruby colour. It is a wine which can be left to mature for about three years and which accompanies the whole meal well: from mixed cured meat appetisers to vegetable pies, from light pasta dishes and stuffed ravioli, omelettes and both red and white meats. It is also excellent with hard, medium-mature cheeses. It should be served at a temperature of 16°C in red wine tulip glasses.
