Merlot dei Colli Orientali del Friuli

Classification: DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata - Quality Wines Produced in a Specific Region)

Color: quite intense ruby red, almost garnet

Region of production: Friuli Venezia Giulia

Minimum percentage of alcohol: 11%

Grapes used: at least 90% Merlot, up to 10% of other red-grape varieties


A VIGOROUS RED WINE

The Merlot produced in this part of the extreme eastern edge of Friuli in the north of Italy is one of the best obtained from this type of grape, found just about everywhere in Italy. The wine has a striking ruby-red color, tending to take on an almost garnet intensity once it has been aged a little.

The typical bouquet of the Merlot is pleasant and distinctive and it has a generally dry, pungent flavor that makes it appropriate for any number of occasions. Wonderful with meat-based meals, it should also be tried with fish, especially if a tomato sauce spiced up with chili peppers is being served.

The particular composition of the soils found in the area covered by this DOC designation has enabled the wine growers in the zone to get the most from a grape variety that generally does not perform as brilliantly in other parts of Italy, especially in terms of quality. A crucial role is doubtlessly also played by the mild climate in this hilly region running along the Slovenian border, keeping the vines well ventilated without exposing them to the rigors of the harsh northern winds.

In order to fully appreciate the character of this wine you have to uncork it at least an hour before drinking, serving it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. Excellent when young, Merlot is earns the classification "riserva" when it is at its very best. This is a designation that requires at least two years of aging, although the process is often extended to a third year.

We recommend trying this Merlot with a dish of Tortiglioni with red radicchio and luganega sausage as well as with Spaghettini with fresh tomatoes, olives and garlic.

It's also quite lovely with a slice of aged Asiago d'allevo, another great product of the Triveneto area.
