The Colli orientali del Friuli DOC area could stock an entire enoteca on its own, considering it includes Chardonnay, Malvasia Istriana, Picolit, Ribolla gialla, Riesling, Sauvignon, Tocai, Traminer, Verduzzo and - if we focus on whites for now - Pinot.
A "wine menu" that bears witness to this Eastern strip of Friuli's natural vocation for anything to do with grapes.
Let us return, however, to Pinot blanc, a variety cultivated in many other areas of Italy, but which grows with exceptional vigour here. The wine obtained from this small, compact and uniquely cylindrical grape is of varying intensities of yellow, with a characteristic and well-balanced floral bouquet. The palate is crisp and full.
It is popular as an aperitif, served at a temperature of 10-12°C, but is astonishingly versatile and goes well with many dishes.
Pinot Bianco Colli Orientali del Friuli can in fact be served with first courses such as Fusilli with leeks and clams, with fish in general and with poultry, but is equally enjoyable with the sweetest of Friuli cheeses.
A superiore type, with minimum alcohol content of 11.5%, and a riserva, with 11% alcohol content after compulsory aging of two years are also produced.
One of the best places to glean a better understanding of Pinot is the Enoteca di Cormons, which offers tasting of the best locally produced wines. Another nearby place worth a visit is the "Vigneto della Pace" (Vineyard of Peace), which boasts over 400 vines from all over the world, used to produce a wine called "Vino della Pace" which is sent each year to Heads of State from all over the world as a gesture of brotherhood. This initiative has further raised the standing of Friuli wines far beyond Italy.
