THE KING OF THE VISIGOTHS' FAVOURITE WHITE |
|

 |
The Marche region deserves to be better known for its enological virtues because this land is capable of giving us magnificent wines of unquestionable value.
Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is probably the best known to the majority of people, much loved in fish and seafood cookery for its delicate flavour and the unique way in which it compliments local cuisine and shellfish in general. Nonetheless it would be wrong to relegate this wine to the category of wines just for fish, because it goes extremely well with many first courses and with white meat.
Verdicchio boasts a long history; the ancient Romans proved decisive in the success of this variety, which was also much coveted by the "barbarians". The story goes that when Alaric, king of the Visigoths, was passing through the Marche on his way to lay siege to Rome, he seized abundant quantities of this much loved wine before continuing on his way to battle.
DOC regulations permit Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi to be labelled with the qualification classico as long as it is produced in the oldest part of the traditional production zone.
This wine has a pale yellow color with greenish reflections and a characteristic yet delicate nose. It has a crisp palate with a slightly bitterish aftertaste.
It is a surprising exception amongst whites because it has a particularly high dry extract, which often gives it truly remarkable body. This characteristic significantly expands its potential for accompanying food, allowing it to accompany dishes that other similar wines could not. For example, it accompanies one particularly palatable dish superbly well: Spaghettini (thin spaghetti) with fresh tomatoes, olives and garlic.
For some time now Marche wineries have also been producing a spumante version of Verdicchio, a successful enterprise that is finding favour with consumers and which we recommend without hesitation.
