Trattorias and restaurants on Milan's Navigli

Milan's Navigli are famous for their night time vibrancy and the wide variety of venues that overlook the canals. Here are the address of places not be missed, including old trattorias that have remained unchanged through time as well as new, fashionable restaurants. The first offer traditional Milanese dishes whilst the latter are venues that indulge in rituals such as Happy Hour and Sunday brunch.

EL BRELLIN

Overlooking Naviglio Grande on the picturesque Vicolo dei Lavandai, the restaurant is located where women used to go to wash their clothes until the Sixties. Thanks to the deviation that links Naviglio Grande to the Olona, this point sees the formation of a current which is ideal for washing out laundry. Set out on two floors, the inside rooms are warm and welcoming; the walls are covered with wallpaper depicting ancient games.
Specialities: typical Milanese cuisine. All of the recipes are homemade, using genuine seasonal products: from the classic Risotto alla Milanese to cutlets, ossobuco and "cassoeula" - a Milanese dish featuring pork ribs, sausages and cabbage served with polenta in the coldest months.
Wine cellar: a varied and well-chosen wine list subdivided between DOC Lombard wines such as Franciacorta and Barbera dell'Oltrepo Pavese, and wines from other regions including those from Piedmont, Trentino, Veneto and Tuscany.

AL PONT DE FERR

An informal style typical of Milanese inns in brick with wooden walls and tables. Not by chance is it one of the most legendary trattorias in the Navigli: for the last 12 years, the chef has proposed an unvarying menu featuring Milanese traditional cuisine, with just one dish that changes every evening. The dishes are unusual and create a perfect combination of Milanese cooking and innovation. The proposals not on the menu are well worth trying, particularly the cheese trolley.
Specialities: first course pasta dishes, such as pappardelle with aubergines. The pies are also excellent.
Wine cellar: over 300 labels from all over the world, in particular California, Australia, Chile, France and New Zealand. The Italian wines are represented by the small vineyards that aim for quality rather than quantity.
