Locanda del Palazzo
|
| Land flavours meet those of the sea in the menu of Locanda del Palazzo, an elegant and atmospheric inn at the foot of Monte Vulture in the heart of Basilicata. Opened two years ago at Barile in the province of Potenza by Lucia and Rino Botte, it is based at the family's historical wine making business. The restaurant offers typical local specialities accompanied by fine Italian wines. |

At the foot of Monte Vulture, at Barile in the province of Potenza lies the ancient home of a winery which was active until the'60s and then abandoned for decades. But two years ago, Lucia and Rino Botte decided to completely restructure the family business to create an elegant and charming inn with eleven rooms and an atmospheric restaurant. It also has a splendid view which, from the top of a hill, takes in the tuff mountains all around. The dining room is situated in the old wine cellars which have maintained their original style and architecture intact: very high ceilings and arches, flooring that is part large-block parquet and part handmade and sanded terracotta. For the furnishings, Rino and Lucia have chosen modern pieces with essential lines so as to render the setting elegant but sober. |

The restaurant's Chef is Lucia, born and raised in that part of Basilicata and the custodian of traditional recipes. Local fish, meats and cheeses are the main ingredients used for preparing flavoursome dishes enhanced with spices such as cinnamon, oregano and cloves. The first courses feature dishes such as ravioli stuffed with sheep's milk ricotta aromatised with cinnamon and mint, and the chickpea, broad-leaf endive and mushroom soup. For seconds, the menu features dishes with fresh fish from the nearby Puglian sea, such as the tasty baccalà cod with cream of lentils and crunchy peppers. There's no shortage of meat-based courses such as leg of lamb stuffed with wild oregano. There is also a wide selection of homemade desserts prepared by Lucia: horn filled with ricotta on a vanilla cream, walnut cake with an Aglianico wine parfait, a milk cream parfait scented with cloves and cinnamon and a nougat mousse with hazelnut cream, made using Campanian nougat from Avellino. For the wines, diners can trust the recommendations of Rino, an expert sommelier and connoisseur. One can choose from amongst four hundred Italian labels, with particular attention to the Aglianico del Vulture, a fine local wine. |
