Ristorante Filippino

Ristorante Filippino is located on the island of Lipari, in the heart of the archipelago bearing the same name, which lies just to the northeast of Sicily. Filippino in Italian means Philippine, so don't be fooled by the name, which has nothing to do with the Philippines. Quite to the contrary, it's a sanctuary of traditional Mediterranean cuisine. Ever since 1910 they have been handing down from father to son the secrets to the art of pure Italian cuisine. Over the years the management of the kitchen has been passed from the founder, Filippino Bernardi, to his grandchildren, Antonio and Lucio, but the original philosophy that has always guided this establishment has remained unchanged.

THE RESTAURANT
To this day the goal of the owners is to combine, by means of long experience, the acquisition of new techniques with old-fashioned qualities like imagination and simplicity. Simplicity and authenticity happen to be the strong points of Ristorante Filippino; witness the fact that all their breads, pasta, desserts and ice-cream is traditionally made right on the premises. The interior decor also contributes to creating a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. Although the original small restaurant has grown into a modern operation with two large dining rooms, they have managed to maintain the friendly family-run atmosphere of yesteryear. The interior look features the warmth of solid dark wood and the use of period furniture. In the winter a crackling fire in the fireplace creates a very intimate, cozy atmosphere. In the summer diners are encouraged to take advantage of an outdoor dining area where they can savor the local delicacies, as they enjoy the island's cool sea breezes.
THE FARE
As one might well expect, the cuisine featured by this establishment is primarily based on seafood, although they also offer many meat dishes and a wide selection of cheeses. Dishes boasting the unadulterated flavor of the Mediterranean, like the cupolette of swordfish with basil, and the sautéed clams, which serve as an antipasto introduction to such delicious first courses as "maccaruna i casa alla Filippino", macaroni prepared with eggplant and mozzarella, and grouper ravioloni in a peasant sauce, served with local capers and hot red peppers. There's a wonderful selection of fish main courses, things like shrimp, lobster and grouper, all prepared with genuine simplicity. If you happen to be especially fond of meat, be sure to try the fillet prepared with cognac or in a creamy mushroom sauce, accompanied by traditional side dishes like Lipari peperonata (a kind of ratatouille).
