Al Capriolo
|
15 kilometers from Cortina, between the majestic rock formations of the Pelmo and the Antelao you come upon the "al Capriolo" Restaurant, located in an old postal way station. The old inn dates back to the early nineteenth century when it served as a post-house on the official Austro-Hungarian mail line running through the Dolomites, connecting Bavaria with Venice.
The Gregori family has been running the facility since the beginning, but the big change came in 1950, the year the present restaurant was opened. The eatery is currently managed by two brothers, Massimiliano and Pietro, the former handling the wine cellar, the latter the kitchen. |

Located right on the road, the current facility conserves all the charm and elegance of the original nineteenth century building. Inside, the warmly elegant rooms only reinforce the sense of welcome and hospitality one always gets from the gracious Marina Gregori, who manages to make this restaurant the sort of place guests love to come back to.
The wine list features some 400 different labels, representing the best that can be found in Italy, as well as an enviable selection of international products. |

The kitchen, a very well run operation in terms of both selecting the primary ingredients and preparing them, is distinguished by its sophisticated fare, items inspired by the culinary tradition of the Cadore region. Everything, from the selection of the products - which change with the seasons, to the time-honored recipes used for preparing the dishes, conspires to create a culinary selection that achieves a masterful blend of tradition and creativity, intense and subtle flavors, in perfect keeping with the gorgeous natural landscape of which this restaurant has become an integral, harmonious component.
Starting with the antipasti, we recommend trying a marinated duck puff-pastry, fresh herbs, crisp corn, paté of dry tomatoes with Lamòn bean sauce, continuing with a dish of Pappardelle with a game sauce and porcini mushrooms, or, as an alternative, an order of Tortiglioni with partridge sauce and grape must sauce. One of the most outstanding second-course dishes is the braised beef cheek accompanied with celeriac purée and red-cabbage compote. To finish up on a sweet note, the Tiramisù, with delicate honey-crusted pears, will not disappoint.
