A stroll in trendy Milan

Whilst the heyday of party Milan may have drawn to a close, the metropolis has not come to a halt and continues to lay down the law where trends and knowing how to live are concerned. This tour of the trendiest side of Milan includes some obligatory stops including aperitifs and wine bars, exhibitions in a book shop, designer shopping and relaxing in a fashionable restaurant or bar.

CORSO COMO, FASHION'S SITTING ROOM
Whilst in the wild Eighties the Brera area was packed out and made its name as the city's sitting room, today the Milanese tend to frequent other areas. The renowned Corso Como is a must: for twenty years now it has been confirming itself as one of the places that dictates trends. The hippest tour cannot fail to take in 10 Corso Como, where what was once a garage has been transformed by Carla Sozzani into an extraordinary multi-functional space with a restaurant, art gallery for photographic exhibitions, an up-to-date book shop with texts on art and design, a record shop and famous boutique which is paradise for those looking for clothes and accessories by the most sophisticated designers.
But all of Corso Como is teeming with chic shops and venues frequented by models and young people from Milan's upper crust, and a stroll here allows one to drink in the city's pulsating life. One need only go a few hundred metres to reach another trendy meeting point: Cantine Isola on Via Paolo Sarpi 30, one of old Milan's wine bars which has remained as it was fifty years ago and is now in the heart of what is known as the Chinese area. Well-frequented at aperitif time, it boasts a varied clientele: journalists, intellectuals and creative types all crowded round the bar holding a good glass of wine.
FROM ISOLA TO THE TORTONA AREA
Still in the Garibaldi station area, in the evening it is worth taking a walk through the Isola area, with its fine Liberty architecture. This area is home to one of the most fashionable venues in the city: the Blue Note in Via Borsieri, the twin of the venue with the same name in New York and the new temple to Milanese jazz. Seated at tables one can enjoy concerts by the most famous soloists, sipping a cocktail or dining by candlelight. In the same area there are a number of Italian trattorias and ethnic or traditional restaurants, though of these it is worth stopping in at Tao, which is famous because it proposes natural foods- entirely vegetarian - alongside interesting photographic exhibitions.
Another area experiencing a rebirth is that of Via Tortona, an old working class area behind the Porta Genova station. Numerous designers and artists have decided to transform the old factories into trendy lofts and laboratories. Above all is renowned photographer Fabrizio Ferri, who has opened his Superstudio here (in Via Forcella 13): a group of photographic studios with display areas for exhibitions of photography, design and contemporary art with a gym, bar and an exclusive restaurant. Even Giorgio Armani has chosen this area for his theatre, designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando in the spaces of the old Nestlé factory in Via Bergognone. In this area one can try out a novelty which is really taking off in MIlan: dinner with a massage. This is offered by Club 360° at Via Tortona, 12 and the Gli amici del Liberty restaurant at Via Savona, 20.
