Christmas markets in Alto Adige
|
December is a period of expectations because, in the midst of lights and shop windows, the holy family and decorations that transform the city, we're waiting for Christmas. But for all those interested in breathing in that magical atmosphere of long gone times, there is a place you surely must not miss. The frame is a classically Christmas scene: spectacular mountains, pine trees and snow. The towns in Alto Adige, with their German roots and culture, re-propose the classic markets of the Advent season, every year during this period. |

The historical centre is filled with market stalls and characteristic stands in the shape of little wooden houses, where you can purchase all you need for the upcoming holidays, from decorations for your Christmas tree and your home, to small wooden masterpieces carved in Val Gardena, to toys for children and real delicacies of local pastry, ending maybe with an energizing glass of glühwein. An event full of colours and flavours, cheered by songs, brass bands and the bells of carriages pulled by horses. The occasion is a real event, where you can enjoy the most traditional local dishes, with much northern Europe influence, yet refined by Mediterranean flavours: canederli (knoedel), gulasch, veal roast with vegetables as a side dish, gnocchetti with spinach and butter (spatzen) and agnolotti with ricotta cheese and spinach (schlutzkrapfen) .The places to taste these goodies are all local, starting from a gasthaus, to first-class restaurants such asZur Rose in Appiano, La Siriola andSt. Hubertus in San Cassiano in Badia, La Stua de Michil at Corvara. Naturally, the most important event is held in Bolzano (here we'll name it Christkindlmarkt, the market of baby Jesus), in piazza Walther, from November 23 to December 23, where approximately sixty exhibitors offer local handicraft products (sculptured wood, material, tablecloths, ceramics, and glass), zelten (a cake made with dry fruit) strudel and stollen and panpepato, not forgetting speck, cheese, mushroom and homemade bread. There will also be concerts, both in the piazza and in the church, while from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., you'll find a market (with gastronomic stands) in Merano, until December 30th, with a great number of gastronomic and handicraft stands. Also during this market there will be many musical events that will cheer all the guests almost every day outside the church. In Vipiteno, the traditional market in piazza Città becomes the backdrop for Vigil Raber's representation of the sacred family, an artist that we still remember after 450 years from his death.
